I can’t find any other way to explain it.The way I look at it there are two ways I have experienced an extreme closeness with God. In my life I have felt a desired closeness when I have gone through a mega letdown, disappointment, or heartbreak. When I trust God through the trials it makes me feel closer to Him. I too have experienced this closeness after God responded to my prayer with a “human like” answer. An answer that we can understand as exactly that: AN ANSWER. Not a roundabout way of answering where we have to dig deep to really understand what He is telling us. Seriously, we need it simplified!
I crave this place where I feel he is closest to me.
I desire the natural ability of trusting God through the trials!

TRUSTING GOD THROUGH THE TRIALS BRINGS YOU CLOSER TO GOD
It’s as if you have to be in this certain place, this place of despair, in order to fully reveal the whole of who God is.Let’s be honest here. When things are going great what need do you have for a savior? What need do you have for someone to speak life into you?
Look at the truth even….
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. -Psalm 34:18
Psalm 147:3 states He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds!
I used to go through dark times frequently. Sometimes for no reason at all I would feel sad, lonely, and depressed. And it wasn’t as if I was unaware of what was happening with me since this all too often was the scenery I was looking at. I could hear myself and see myself like I was standing on the outside of my life looking in.
“Stacey, you need to be stronger than this. You need to shake this off and pick yourself up.”
But sometimes it took so long for me to do that. My body and spirit were like dead weight. My focus was on the darkness all around me. I was lying in a pitiful pit of self-pity just staring off into vast nothingness. Days would roll on by and I would experience no joy in my heart. I would continue my quiet time with God in the morning but it was as if His word was falling upon deaf ears.I was numb to Him and his prodding.
THERE IS PURPOSE IN THE TRIALS
You know when the bible says in Psalm in 23:5 “You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.”? And when your cup is full it pours that blessing over onto others. Well….when I was focusing on those dark moments the only thing my cup was overflowing with was an abundance of misery. Those closest to me had no idea what hit them when my wrath came running out of all my broken cracks and deep crevices.
This was such a scary place to be. And my focus needed a fast reroute!
Did you know that God uses your trials to further the kingdom? What you are going through right now can push the gospel into places you never imagined.
“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel”. – Philippians 1:12
I know many of you may be going through your very own heartbreak at this very moment. And I know that right now my words may not be resonating as comfort in your broken places, but hang with me a moment here. You’ll begin to see why there is purpose in the trials.
TURNING TO GOD FOR HELP IN THE TRIALS
In troubled times our default is not most often to seek God as an immediate response (even though that’s what most of us desire it to be). No…our immediate response is more than likely a temper tantrum. We get angry, sad, annoyed and the like and we put on this “fix it” attitude. Your marriage is crumbling, the money rolling in is non-existent compared to the stack of bills on the counter, your dear child isn’t being so “dear” in school, and your job is full of nonsense and stress….the list can go on and on. No matter what the situation or heartbreak you are facing you want it to end and you want to take the fastest (not always straightest) route to get there.
But what if we could rewire our settings? –
What if we could retrain ourselves to having “acceptance and prayer” be our initial response to life’s trials? How would our experience with heartbreak change? I’ll tell you. It’s all about the focus shift. Take your gaze off the darkness and rest it upon the peaceful, all-knowing, strength providing, loving God who is full of light. We can learn to trust God through the trials by know who He is and what he has already done for us!
I have come into the world as light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 12:46
The warmth of Gods rest will envelope you like a warm comfortable blanket and you will know that this too shall pass. Your view of the heartbreak will be more of a seeking moment to see what God is doing in your life and you will be anxious to see how He takes care of business. Whether you choose to pass through this heartbreak kicking and screaming or curled up in a loving Father’s lap resting assured that He’s taking care of it all is up to you. I know I would choose the latter.
LOOKING AT TRIALS IN A NEW WAY
Now…hold fast. I know many people are thinking “sunshine and rainbows won’t get you anywhere”, but I challenge you sweet friend, what have you got to lose?
So you see…this is why I don’t despair during a heartbreak season. Sure…my initial response still needs resetting sometimes, maybe even daily, but through many experiences I know that in that heartbreak God is holding tight to me. And I know that at the end of this dark time or dark situation He always prevails and I come out the other side of the tunnel with a smile on my face and praise on my lips.
