GET FAITH

THE KEYS TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH

We all get to that point in our lives. We start questioning what our purpose is. I feel like these questions come up for a good reason. What’s the reason you ask? Lack of faith. Now, don’t misunderstand me here. You may have faith but how strong is your faith? How deep is your faith? How wide is your faith?

A strong, deep, and wide faith is what we need, sister. When the world tries to shake us we need to be rock solid when it comes to our foundation which is Christ. No worries – I got you! Follow along for the keys to spiritual growth and what you can do to build your faith into an unshakable foundation!

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT?

Spiritual development, in relation to a follower of Christ, can be defined properly within the word of God. Essentially we as Christians have a goal to become more and more like Christ each and every day. I am loving 1 Peter 2:21 as guidance on this:

“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.”

Also Ephesians 5:1-2 –

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

  • What is the reason for spiritual development? –

Ah…the big question… Why do I need to develop spiritually? Let’s go back to the word of God, shall we?

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” -Romans 12:2

When we focus on our spiritual development we are more able to know what God’s will for our life is.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:34-35

This is God’s calling to us. We are to love others. We are to stand out as his disciples by the showing of this love. In order to show the love of Jesus properly we need to have a strong and deep faith.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life ,and have it to the full.” – John 10:10

We need to develop ourselves spiritually in order to be prepared and to live an abundant life. God wants us to be alert. The devil prowls around at every moment and he desires our destruction. But God desires a life of abundance for us!

THE FAITH PROCESS

Here is something we must remember. Being reborn aka the moment we ask Christ to be the Savior of our lives – means we are baby Christians. Just like good ol’ fashioned babies – Christian babies can’t stay babies forever. They need to grow and this doesn’t just happen overnight. It’s a process. And, I’m here to tell you, the process of growing faith lasts a lifetime!

The faith process can also be compared to the process of growing a tree. It starts out as a little seedling. The roots are short and it can’t produce fruit yet. It needs extra nourishment to help the roots grow deeper and the trunk grow stronger and taller. Like a tree – the process of growing a deeper faith takes time. Before the tree starts producing the focus remains on growing the trunk and roots to be strong and solid. Eventually the tree roots are so deep you can’t pull the tree out by hand. The goal is that when a strong wind comes the tree will stay right where it is – unshaken. This is what a deeper faith looks like too!

WAYS TO BUILD YOUR FAITH

First and foremost – the most important key to spiritual growth and building your faith is this: developing your relationship with Christ. Think about it – in order to be more like Him (which we saw in the Word above) we need to know WHO He is…right?

I have a few ideas listed here on how to build a deeper faith and focus in on spiritual development and growth. However, I want you to focus on your relationship with Jesus first and foremost. How do you do that? Well, think about how you would develop any relationship. I would say one of the keys to a strong and lasting relationship is communication! Which starts me off on our list:

  • PRAYER –

Yes, communication sister! We cannot grow spiritually and have a great relationship with Christ if we are not communicating with Him! Let’s look at this a little closer since we all think we know what proper communication is: “The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium” or “the successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings.” by Lexico

(Did you see that there? Not only does prayer grow your faith but it doesn’t necessarily always have to happen in the form of speaking. You can also write your prayers down!)

Communication is a two-way street. Thus, so is prayer. We pray to speak but we also pray to listen. The more we have open communication with Jesus, the more we will desire to communicate with Him and know him better.

Side note: Did you know your faith grows by HEARING the word of God? I like to add scripture into my prayer. It helps commit it to memory and shows me how applicable the word of God is!

  •  BIBLE STUDY –

You know it was coming! Yes, bible study is one of the keys to spiritual growth and deepening your faith! The more time we spend in the word, the more we will know what it says! (I know…lightbulb moment.) 2 Timothys’ got us here:

“All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of god may be competent, equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Everyday we should be spending time in the word of God. Even if you have read a verse before and studied it thoroughly, God is good at finding ways to bring it into a new light for you. What a verse meant to you previously might mean something new to you today. Not sure where to start? Check out my post on How to Effectively Study the Bible and download my “go-to” study method!

  • SERVICE –

Remember how we talked about what spiritual development was earlier? Our goal is to be more like Christ, right?
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”- Mark 10:45

Another one of the keys to spiritual growth is SERVICE, friend! Serving God and serving others…in that order…and usually hand-in-hand! Christ came and he came to serve. He served big time when he died on the cross for us!

Serving means putting ourselves in the back seat, Jesus is the driver, and whom we are serving get shotgun. The idea here is to stop focusing on ourselves and focus on Jesus first then others. We are showing the love of Jesus through the act of service. We are being his hands and feet.

  • COMMUNITY –

We are called to gather together as a body of Christ. To draw near and be a help and encouragement to one another. To bear one another’s burdens. When we are surrounded by like minded people who love Christ with all their hearts our faith grows. That is why community is one of the keys to spiritual development.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him – a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Christ, other believers, and ourselves – a cord of three strands is not easily broken. Joining a community of believers will strengthen you and grow your faith in many ways. You can even be part of a  like-minded community of women here on the blog! Be sure to join the community and the conversation over on the gram and facebook! We would be thrilled to have you!

  • TRIALS –

Oh yes, sister. If we can’t grow through the trials we go through then what are we doing?! One of the toughest keys to spiritual growth is growing through the trials you are faced with. This reminds me so much of this post I wrote a few years back. I see it as we have two options when we are faced with trying times in life: we can either run towards God or run away from him. And friend, I can  tell you from experience, running towards God amidst a trial will grow and strengthen your faith like you’ve never experienced before!

My most favorite verse helps us to understand why trials are important to spiritual development:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2-4

Our patience and perseverance through trials can feed and grow us spiritually if we choose to let it. The strong choose to let it.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR FAITH STRONG

Keeping your faith strong comes down to setting a routine and checking in with yourself (and possibly an accountability partner) daily. It’s so easy to get lost in the weeds. One of the biggest keys to spiritual growth and keeping your faith strong is relying on the Holy Spirit.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” – John 14:15-17

he Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. When we don’t know how to pray the Holy Spirit prays for us. The Holy Spirit is the power of Christ in us. The Holy Spirit helps to grow us, brings forth scripture to our minds, mends our spirits, speaks on our behalf, and guides us on the right path. Hold onto the Holy Spirit! He is your friend, sister!

  • THE KEY TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH – A ROCK SOLID FOUNDATION –

What we build our lives on will ultimately decide if we remain standing or tumble to the ground at the first sight of inclement weather. Be patient with yourself. The faith process is just that; a process. Focus on the ways to build your faith. You don’t have to work on them all at once. Pick one, master it, and keep adding. You got this, friend! You are not alone!

We welcome you in!
