HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY HALLOWEEN – 5 TIPS (AND MAYBE A TRICK OR TWO…)

Oh yes – the time we all love and love to hate when it comes to our waistline. Am I right?! Halloween is the gateway if you think about it. It’s the first Holiday before all the other holidays that involves food, family and holiday parties. It’s the holiday that sets the tone for the rest of the year. No worries, I am here to help you discover and implement some healthy Halloween tips that will be sure to have you getting off on the right foot!

Halloween can be enjoyed rather than feared (I mean…unless the costumes are SUPER scary…BOO! Did I scare ya? No?! Fine then…I’ll move on.) We can have a healthy Halloween and enjoy everything the occasion has to offer. The key is developing healthy Halloween habits that will help carry us through the season. Here’s how:

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN TIP #1 – IT ALL BEGINS AT THE DOOR

Seriously! It’s either beginning at your door or someone else’s. What we choose to hand out for treats (or tricks if you’re a funny kind of gal;) has a huge impact on our health and wellness during the Halloween season. Choosing to hand out healthy candy for kids is important and, might I add, possible! 

A few healthy Halloween treats to hand out could contain apples, trail mix, popcorn balls, built bars (12% off with code Save12), water bottles, puppy chow, and so much more! If you want to go a step further you can provide healthy trick or treat alternatives for children with different food allergies as well. Check out this recipe I created for an easy trail mix treat!

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN TIP #2 – KEEP IT OUT WHEN IN DOUBT

Let’s be honest. We all have that one treat or candy that we just can’t limit ourselves on. Mine…ALL THINGS CHOCOLATE! But one thing our family does love having in our house during the Halloween season is a pumpkin jar filled with candy corn and candy pumpkins (I know…not everyone loves this candy…you’re the weird ones.) In order to stick to my healthy Halloween habits I chose to only put things in my house that I know I can limit myself on. Thus….candy corn.

 

  •    It’s not about saying “no” all the time to the goodies – 

It’s not about feeling deprived. What it is about is knowing yourself and practicing moderation. Eating healthy on Halloween doesn’t mean you can’t have a few treats here and there throughout the month. I love chocolate. Not having it in my house helps me to limit how much I have. But you better believe – if I have a hankering for a piece of chocolate I will drive my bottom to the store and get me a small candy bar (or whatever it is I’m feeling.) What I will not do is go buy a whole tube of chocolate chip cookie dough (and continue to chew a hole through the casing and squeeze it into my mouth before I even pulled out of the store parking lot…) I mean….not that I have ever done that or anything….

 

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN TIP #3 – PLAN AHEAD

Parties! Parties everywhere! Tis’ the season, friend. Whether it’s a party you’re hosting or a party you’re crashing, parties can be a trigger for those trying to keep our healthy Halloween habits in check! Here’s a healthy Halloween tip for ya: prepare healthy Halloween snacks for yourself either to take or have at home! Some ideas could be boo bananas, candy corn parfait, monster head avocado toast, or spiders on a log. This way you get to enjoy the season and stick to eating healthy on Halloween!   • Outings with friends and family – 

If you’re anything like me, the fall season creates many opportunities for outings and adventures! What does that mean? Cider, donuts, and pumpkin spice everything (oh, my!)! Have no fear! Eating healthy on Halloween outings doesn’t have to be ‘tricky’! (see what I did there). Remember what I said about moderation before? Go on an adventure (an active one would be best), have that sugar-free, non-fat, pumpkin spice latte, and eat that pumpkin spice cake donut. Boom. Breakfast complete. Now, move-on!

 

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN TIP #4 – STAY ACTIVE

And not just on the day of Halloween! Getting involved in healthy Halloween activities will help you feel your best throughout the season AND help you stick to your healthy Halloween habits. A few ideas to help you stay active: Sign up for a 30 day challenge, go to events that have active games (3-legged race, corn mazes, sack hop race), or check out this October Workout Challenge I have created! It doesn’t have to be overwhelming – simply move your body in a way that brings you joy! We went on our annual fall trip to seek out the best corn maze near us this past weekend and I had over 11,000 steps! And we had a load of fun!

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN TIP #5 – HEALTHIFY THE POTLUCK SCENE

Potlucks – the place where they have all the food, all the fun, and all the over-full bellies! First things first, prior to even attending a potluck over Halloween you need to decide how you want to feel when it’s all over. I will give you a moment to process that…………………………..

Good? K…let’s move on…

So, I’m sure we all agree that we don’t want to feel like a busted can of biscuits when we are done attending a potluck. Good news – there are ways to have a healthy Halloween potluck! Check out these healthy Halloween tips:

 

  • Bring your own healthy alternatives – 

You can’t control what others bring but you can control what you bring. Bring a dish to pass that you know you will love, that will help you stick to your goals, and, for a bonus point, easy to prepare! 

  • Tricks beyond the dish – 

Here are a few tested and tried tricks that will help you stick to your healthy eating habits during Halloween: use a smaller plate, only add your 3 most favorite foods out of the entire potluck, enjoy those foods slowly, stop when you are full, give thanks for the nourishment, and don’t go back for seconds.

Pair healthy eating with some fun activity, preparation and planning ahead, and practicing moderation and you have yourself a fool-proof plan to not only stay healthy during Halloween but ENJOY it too!
